Main Purpose of Job

The role sits within the economics and social affairs team. The team compromise a mix of policy advisers and programme managers working on a wide variety of issues including economic reform, education, digital inclusion, health and anti-corruption.
This is an exciting time to be working on economics in the British Embassy Jakarta. Indonesia is the largest economy in ASEAN and a key partner for the UK. The UK and Indonesia have recently signed a new Strategic Partnership - growth and economic cooperation is a core part of this.
The role’s main focus is to support UK economic priorities in Indonesia, including financial services cooperation, economic reform and Indonesia's OECD accession process. The job holder will provide economic advice to senior Embassy leadership, build relationships with government, regulators and the private sector, and identify opportunities to advance UK economic and commercial interests in Indonesia.
In addition, they will have the opportunity to work across a wide variety of economic issues. Exact responsibilities will depend on Post priorities, but the current post holder has worked on areas including financial services, Indonesia's OECD accession process, international investment, economic reform and the application of economic analysis to Indonesia's regulatory environment. Financial services is a particularly significant part of the current portfolio, as the job holder is the Embassy's principal lead in this area.
The job holder will work closely with other teams in the Embassy, the UK Treasury and Department for Business and Trade, to achieve the UK’s objectives in Indonesia. The job holder will also have the opportunity to engage with a variety of Indonesian stakeholders, including the Ministry of Finance, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, think tanks and universities, regulators and the private sector.
Note: The Embassy is currently going through a transformation process, which could lead to changes in the role or team structure.

What the Jobholder will be Expected to Achieve

  • Provide authoritative economic advice and briefing to the Ambassador, Deputy Head of Mission, visiting UK Ministers, and others, helping shape the Embassy's overall approach to economic engagement with Indonesia
  • Analyse and report on economic developments within Indonesia.
  • Build and maintain relationships with senior Indonesian government officials, regulators, think tanks, investors and private sector stakeholders to advance UK economic objectives and identify opportunities for deeper bilateral cooperation.
  • Act as the Embassy's principal adviser on financial services, leading engagement with government, regulators and industry on banking, insurance, fintech, sustainable finance and Islamic finance, while supporting UK firms to identify opportunities and navigate market access challenges.
  • Lead UK-Indonesia engagement on economic reform priorities, including Indonesia's OECD accession process, investment policy, regulatory reform and supply chain resilience, working with Indonesian counterparts to support reforms that promote sustainable growth and improve the business environment.
  • Drive delivery of the UK Government's growth mission in Indonesia by providing economic analysis, identifying commercial opportunities for UK businesses, and advising colleagues and senior leaders on economic developments that affect UK prosperity interests.
  • Support implementation of regional economic programmes where these contribute to UK economic objectives in Indonesia, including the ASEAN Economic Integration Programme, which focuses on payment systems, financial inclusion, digitalisation of customs, and ASEAN DEFA.
  • Plan, brief and deliver economic focused engagements for the Ambassador, Deputy Head of Mission, and inward and outward senior visitors.
  • Line manage the AO Economic Research and Support Officer, supporting them to deliver their responsibilities.
In addition, all staff at post are expected to participate in wider Embassy activities, including committee work and other corporate roles, as well as supporting ad-hoc crisis management activities. This will account for around 10% of the jobholders time.
There may be some opportunities for domestic and regional travel, as well as travel to the UK.

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Either an Undergraduate or Master's degree in Economics or a closely related subject (e.g. Econometrics, Development Economics, Financial Economics etc.)
  • Ability to conduct quantitative and qualitative economic analysis
  • Confidence using data to support analysis; this includes an ability to collect, analyse and display data effectively
  • A self-starter, able to work independently and prioritise effectively to deliver high quality work to tight deadlines
  • Ability to work constructively across a number of teams with differing objectives; able to think strategically to align activities with the UK and Indonesia’s priorities
  • Ability to build productive relations with external stakeholders, both British and Indonesian
  • Willingness to work flexibly to adapt to changing priorities
  • Language requirement: Proficiency in English and Bahasa Indonesia

Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Academic knowledge of or experience working on international economics
  • Academic knowledge of or experience working on financial services or financial markets
